Luke Halpin's Legs
Luke Halpin's Legs: Home page
Dolphin In Need!

Introduction:
In Season 1, Episode 25, Flipper and the Elephant, Part 2, Luke Halpin performs one of his longest running scenes. His running ability is every bit as thrilling as his abilities in the water. Watching his legs as he runs is a fine opportunity to examine the muscle development in his legs.

This mini-story is based on scenes from Episode 25 from Season 1.

Story:
Flipper is trapped in shallow water, and there's no way to move him!

Sandy: Flipper will die in this heat!
I've got to go for help!
Bud and Bonnie: But we have no way to get back to town from here!

Sandy makes a difficult decision:

Sandy: Then there's no choice! I'll have to run the whole way!

Bonnie is completely shocked by Sandy's idea:

Bonnie: Oh, no, Sandy! It's miles and miles! You'll never make it! Sandy: I've got to, Bonnie! If I don't, Flipper will die! Bonnie: The strain on your legs would be too much! Sandy: I know, but I can't just sit here and watch Flipper burn to a crisp!

Bonnie is certain that Sandy will never reach the town in time to save Flipper!

Bonnie: Bud, please say something to your brother... Bud: Bonnie, we have to give Sandy a chance!
Bonnie: But why?
Bud: Because Sandy is the fastest one here! None of us has the chance to make it like him!

Bonnie reluctantly watches Sandy leave. Flipper's survival is now completely dependent on Sandy.

With his incredible momentum, Sandy runs straight through obstacles without missing a step:

Meanwhile, Bonnie and Bud desperately try to protect Flipper from the burning sun:

Bonnie: Flipper is going to dehydrate in this heat!

Bud: We have to keep him moist, so Sandy will have time to get help!

Bonnie: Do you really think he can make it?

Bud: Sandy is the best runner I know! If anyone can, he can!

Luke Halpin's leg muscles burn as he continues to pump out the miles:

A small tree cannot stop Luke Halpin; he bulldozes his way right through it:

The long miles wear down the young athlete:

The runner's new obstacle: a lake, with no way to cross it.

With time running out for Flipper, what will Sandy do?!

Sandy: There's no bridge anywhere! I've got to swim across!

Despite being exhausted from the long run, Sandy swims on and on:

Sandy finally reaches the other side:

Sandy's powerful legs emerge from the water:

Sandy can barely stand after the hard swim. But there is still more running to do!

Sandy: I've got to make it...everyone's depending on me!

Flipper's survival depends on the strength of Sandy's powerful legs:

The final mile:

The heroic teen:

Bonnie: Flipper is alive, thanks to Sandy! And to think, I doubted you! Mr Braddock: When they told me Sandy ran the entire way from the lake to get me and the truck... Mr Braddock: ...I couldn't believe it! Whew, I'm getting dizzy just thinking of how far he ran! Bud: I'm pretty sure no one is going to doubt Sandy from now on!

Porter: Congratulations, Sandy, the town decided to honor you by naming the local road race after you! Bud: Did you hear that Flipper?! Sandy's a famous runner now! Bud: But Sandy, how were you able to go that whole distance?! You didn't catch a ride along the way, did you? Sandy: I wish! Just be glad I'm in good shape, or else Flipper would be gone now!
Bud: (gulp!) I guess you're right, Sandy.
