Luke Halpin: Underwater Lifting
Two scenes from Season 2 show Sandy Ricks lifting large objects underwater. These scenes provide an opportunity to observe Luke Halpin in a unique circumstance. The scene from Episode 31 ("Flipper and the Mermaid") is of particular interest because it is perhaps the only instance in the entire Flipper TV series that shows Luke Halpin underwater for an extended scene without any gear (no scuba suit, no air tank, no face mask, no snorkle, no fins).* Watching him rescue a trapped diver who is wearing full gear is a great study in contrast. Later in the scene, Sandy Ricks is keeping company with the recovering diver. Luke is dressed almost exactly the same way he was underwater (only shoes have been added). This brings out the great contrast between his heroic body and the cold & exhausted diver. Note: If you study the enlarged versions of 49e to 49h in Ep 31 closely, you will see Luke Halpin's incredible eight-pack abs. (for more pictures of Luke's eight-pack abs, click here.) The scene from Episode 50 ("Flipper and the Shark Cage") is preceded by the sight of Luke Halpin removing his shirt, a scene not unlike the old comic books showing Clark Kent removing his shirt to expose the superhero persona underneath. Luke Halpin, of course, does not use a brightly covered uniform, since his natural body is plenty heroic by itself. * - In Episode 12, "The Lady and the Dolphin," Sandy dives into the water wearing only his cutoffs, but he is never shown underwater.
